An evening that combines poetry, music, dance, women’s empowerment and chocolate bacon cupcakes can mean only one thing: the annual GSWA Chocolate House.
Each spring the Goshen Women’s Student Association invites GC students to join them for an evening dedicated to celebrating women and their talents in the arts. This year roughly 15 female Goshen students will share personal works of visual and performance art at the event.“[Chocolate House] is one of my favorite events of the year because it’s all about appreciating the gifts of women right here in our own community,” said Krista Kaufman, a senior social work major and a GSWA leader.
Besides the chance to see students’ talent, one of the main draws of the Chocolate House event is the wide assortment of chocolate delectables available to guests during the show. Goodies this year will include cake balls, chocolate cake, dark chocolate bacon cupcakes, banoffee pie, hummus and fruit.
“I always look forward to the performers, especially the poetry readers,” said Lauren King, a senior English major who helped organize the event. “Their messages are so powerful. And, of course, I’m looking forward to the chocolate!”
The proceeds from the event’s entrance fee—$2 per person, $3 for a pair—will go to Soup of Success, a 20-week-long occupation and life skills training program for women living in poverty in Elkhart County.
“Chocolate House is about beauty and solidarity and fun and delicious food,” explained Emma Brooks, a junior art major and a planner of the event. “It will be an uplifting, empowering time.”
GSWA’s Chocolate House will begin at 9 p.m. on Sunday in Newcomer 19. All students, male and female, are welcome to attend.
