Tennis taken down by Marian
Both Goshen men’s and women’s tennis teams fell shy of Marian University this past Saturday at the Goshen College complex. Juan Miguel Ciudad, sophomore, earned victories in both singles and doubles play for the men but the Goshen College men’s tennis team fell to Marian University 5-4. The Knights have now beaten Goshen in every match since 2008, but Goshen this time came up two games shy of erasing that streak. Goshen (5-3, 4-2 CL) started out on top 2-1 after doubles play with Ciudad and Kartikeya Sharma, a junior, winning 9-7 at no. 1 and Lukas Kanther and Luke...

Women’s tennis season review
The Goshen College women’s tennis team finished its season last Thursday evening in a losing effort against Anderson University. The result dropped their record this fall to 0-11 for the regular season. After many players from last year graduated, the team had to add several new faces to the lineup. In total, five new players were part of this year’s team: first-years Chloe Woodward, Kendra Lozano, and Megan Eigsti, sophomore Abby Banning, and junior Lynnia Noel. Along with five newcomers, the Maple Leafs also had to face some injuries throughout the season, with Lozano getting injured in the third game...

Women’s tennis drops two
This past weekend, Goshen’s women’s tennis team played two matches against quality opponents. On Saturday afternoon the Leafs traveled to Marion, Indiana to take on Indiana Wesleyan University, where Goshen struggled to a 9-0 loss at the hands of the Wildcats. In fact, IWU did not drop a set that day. “IWU has been dominant for ages. They’ve been conference champions for 20-some years straight. IWU’s team has a lot of depth and their skill makes them a lot of fun to play. That helps us to improve our game as well,” said junior Joelle Friesen. The next day, the...

Goshen tennis struggles as fall play winds down
The Goshen men’s tennis team lost to Marian in the first round of the Crossroads League Tournament on Tuesday. The Men traveled to Marian as the fifth seed in the Crossroads League Tournament while the Knights sat at number four. Despite playing in good form in recent weeks, the Maple Leafs were unable to avenge their early season loss to Marian. The Leafs closed out regular season play last week with a dominant 7-2 win over Crossroads League bottom-dweller Bethel College. That gave the Maple Leafs back-to-back wins to close out the season and pushtheir regular season record to 6-4...

Women’s tennis finishes season
Although the season is over for the Goshen women’s tennis team, the learning experience for the women has just begun. The team finished the season 2-10, with the two wins being at home against Cornerstone University and Defiance College. Though it was a tough year, the team didn’t lack in effort throughout the season. With just two seniors on the team, coach Doug Gossman had only a few seasoned players. “I thoroughly enjoyed the season,” Gossman said. “The team worked hard and listened well. We have a great group of young women who play tennis at Goshen College. I believed...

Women’s tennis hosting Cornerstone
Goshen’s women’s tennis team hosts Cornerstone University today at 4 p.m. The Leafs have yet to snag a win this season but might pull through as the Golden Eagles come into the match with a record of 0-4. In Goshen’s Tuesday match-up against Grace College, No. 3 doubles partners Corine Alvarez and Lauren Stoltzfus clenched the victory to earn the only point for Goshen, sending them home with a 1-8 loss. The newly paired Alvarez and Stoltzfus earned the team’s first doubles win of the 2011 season. The Leafs’ current record dwindles to 0-7, and 0-6 in conference. The Golden...

Grace sweeps women’s tennis
The Goshen Women’s tennis team returned home from a four-game road streak this past Saturday, hoping to achieve their first MCC win of the season against Grace College. The day ended in another disappointment, as Grace swept past Goshen, winning all nine matches. The Grace Lancers improved their record to 4-4 overall, while the Leaf’s remain at 1-7, 0-6 in the MCC. The strongest performance of the day came from seniors Rachel Lanctot and Alli Hawkins, playing at the top of the doubles category. The pair fought admirably, but ended up losing 8-5. Tennis Season Ends with MCC Tournament
The Maple Leafs’ 2009 men’s and women’s tennis season ended this past week with the Mid-Central Conference (MCC) Tournament at Indiana Wesleyan University. The tournament was played indoors due to weather. The women had a particularly rough tournament schedule, never facing a seed lower than #2, facing some of the top players from around the MCC. Hannah Groff, the only senior on the roster, played her final collegiate match at the MCC Tournament. Groff fell in both her singles and doubles matches, facing #1 seeds in both matches. The Leafs did not manage to win any of their quarterfinal matches...

Tennis coach resigns in order to obtain degree
After eight years committed to the Goshen College women’s tennis team, Sarah Yoder has turned in her resignation. Yoder played four years of collegiate tennis but most recently served four years as head coach of the women’s tennis team. “Over the past year I have been back in school working on a secondary social studies teaching license,” Yoder said. “Next fall I will be ready for student teaching and I knew I wouldn’t be able to coach any longer. We have too many matches during the week that require leaving midday.” Though she leaves behind what she refers to as...
