“Comfort Women” Series: Art for Humanity
Walking through Goshen College’s current Senior Art Exhibit, you’ll notice a number of posters in red and white that belong to a series titled “Comfort Women.” The ridged lines and structures of the posters seem unable to hold together the content presented. “You can’t contain horror in structured spaces,” said senior Shina Park, creator of the series. Park is an art major at Goshen College from Vancouver, Canada. With the combination of her Korean heritage, her passion for social justice and her graphic design skills, Park presented the topic of comfort women to the Goshen community. Comfort women were women...

Artwork by four Goshen College seniors is on display in the Hershberger Art Gallery through March 27. A reception to celebrate the work of these four artists was held in the Music Center on Sunday, March 9. The exhibit features many types of artwork, including ceramics, figure drawing, mixed media and graphic design. Brooks, who chose to present graphic design works, is using different techniques to display her designs. For example, a spiral-bound calendar hangs from fishing line, while an...

Senior art major finds inspiration on 8th street
Have you ever looked at other people’s houses on Google Maps, zooming in to get a close-up view of the porch, the windows, the doors—every external detail? That is what Abbie Miller, a senior art major, did to create what she has named “The 8th Street Project.” After taking contemporary art history, an upper level art class, Miller started thinking about things she saw in her everyday life as inspiration for her work. She began by drawing the houses on 8th Street in Goshen, each house on one library catalogue card. Then she began looking at other 8th Streets across the country...

Senior show explores ‘Embracing Reality’
A new semester of theater productions begins with an ending as Billy Funk wraps up his work in the theater department with his senior recital, Billy Funk’s Triple Showdown with Reality, this Friday at 8 p.m. in the Umble Center. Funk’s recital is comprised of three one acts: Interface by Mic Weinblatt, directed by Sammy Rosario, a senior; Eukiah by Lanford Wilson; and Degas, C’est Moi by David Ives, both directed by Phil Weaver-Stoesz (’12). Each script is unique, said Funk, but the three are held together by the main characters’ struggle with “embracing reality,” a theme that carries personal significance...

‘Urinetown’ set focuses on environmentalism
Maryn Munley, a senior theater and environmental science major, combined her two disciplines to create an environmentally conscious set for the main stage musical, Urinetown. The play is Munley’s senior show. “Doug [Caskey, professor of theater] and I had talked about a set design that could be made out of recycled materials that is environmentally conscious. This was something we discussed beginning my freshman year during May term. It’s really an amalgamation of my two disciplines,” Munley said. After reading the script, Munley thought Urinetown would be the perfect play for creating a set made of recycled and used materials....

Grubaugh sparks social change through theater
This Friday evening at 8 p.m. Jenna Grubaugh, a theater major, will present her senior recital to the Goshen College community in hopes that it will spark political and ethical conversation among her audience members. The play, called Two Rooms, will be held in the Umble Center, and admission is free. A Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies minor, Grubaugh was committed from the beginning to finding a script that addressed an issue that “mattered.” “I love the kind of theater that is challenging and makes the audience think in a new way,” says Grubaugh. And so after much searching, Grubaugh...

Printmaking Step-by-Step
Beth Glick, an art major, is only two weeks away from the opening of her senior show. With varied interests in theater, graphic design and drawing, Glick decided to refine her printmaking skills this semester. Here we offer a tour of creating a monotype. In Printmaking class, students work mainly with black, oil-based inks. Beth, however, wanted to experiment with color. “These inks are water-based, which means they are healthier and easier to clean up,” said Glick. Starting with a clean Plexiglass plate, Glick chooses her first background color and inks it on with a brayer. Next, she dampens her...

Art Guarded by Stuffed Heron: Seniors Work on Show
Eleven senior art majors are creating various types of work for their upcoming March 28th and April 11th Senior Art Shows. The one-credit graduation requirement asks students to pick a theme and then explore the topic through the artist’s choice of medium. Students for these shows are working with charcoal, acrylic paint, ceramics, printmaking, graphic design and encaustic (wax). All of the artwork needs to be produced during the final semester of college, so previously created work cannot be used. Senior art major, Annali Smucker states: “To have a theme and to produce a show around it is challenging on...
