Student Senate summary 3/27
The Student Senate’s bi-weekly meeting was held in WL 309 on Monday evening. It opened with introductions, and started with a few questions for Chandler Buchfeller, director of residence life and housing. The senate had several questions to follow up on the meeting Buchfeller and Brian Mast, director of facilities, had with students living on the third floor of the Kulp Residence Hall earlier this month to speak about concerns of mice and a broken toilet. They inquired if there would be a potential for students to use Coffman for housing instead of Kulp, but Buchfeller said no. He did...

Emotional Support Animals ease student stress
There are a lot of changes that happen in a person’s life when transitioning to college. School moves away from its rigid structure as there is a lot more choice involved, and students have to move on campus. There is also stress that comes from school and other life responsibilities, and people cope in a variety of different ways. One way to help process the stress of life is through an emotional support animal. The difference between a service animal and an emotional support animal is explained by Jordan Blank, resident director: “These [service animals] go through a training program...

Res Life on housing
Goshen College’s Residence Life team hosted this year’s Housing Information Night for the 2024-25 school year this past Monday evening in the Church-Chapel fellowship hall. Led by Chandler Buchfeller, director of residence life and housing, the meeting covered housing and meal plan options available for the upcoming school year, timelines for housing selection, and application processes for all on-campus spaces. The first notable change for next year is that housing deposits for the Intentional Living Communities and the Octavio Romero Student Apartments are $75, compared to $200 in previous years. This change is partly due to “Homies 4 Housing,” a...

Hahn was previously the full-time Residence Director (RD) of Kratz Residence Hall and Kulp Residence Hall, but she has been splitting her time between the two jobs this semester. The new position has been created and funded by a three-year grant that GC received in October 2022 from the Office on Violence Against Women, a branch of the U.S. Department of Justice. The grant is intended to improve an institution’s ability to handle the...

Unknown man spotted in Kratz women’s bathroom
An unidentified man was sighted leaving the women’s bathroom on the second floor of Kratz Hall last week on Jan. 25. In the week since, rumors have circulated on campus about his identity and method of entry, and campus safety has been working with Res Life to get to the bottom of it. The man, described in a campus safety alert as “white with blonde hair” and “approximately 6 feet, 2 inches” remains unidentified. “[We] responded to the call to learn more details about this sighting,” said Chad Coleman, director of campus safety. “After taking a report from the RA,...

Restorative changes in residence life
Although Goshen College is retaining its status as a dry campus, the Residence Life (ResLife) team is taking a new approach to campus discipline, shifting the focus towards reconciliation rather than punishment. “Misconduct and violations of the Standards have historically been seen as this ‘Thing’ that’s bad and shameful,” said Kevin Schultz, residence director for Romero Apartments and Intentional Living Communities (both of which serve mostly juniors and seniors). “Now, these situations are an opportunity to figure out where the gap is between the student and the community.” The new, more restorative approach will attempt to reconnect students who have...
