Opera Scenes to showcase student talent
Since the end of January, vocal students have been hard at work preparing scenes from eight different musicals and operas. All that hard work will come together tomorrow, Friday the 17th at 7 p.m. on the stage of Reith Recital Hall in the Music Center. Every few years, the music and theater departments team up to produce a full-fledged musical, but this year, as in other years, the music department is producing selections from many different musicals. Students perform as witches, pirates for “A Night of Opera”
On Sunday, Goshen College choir students performed “A Night of Opera” — a high-energy operatic choral concert that featured three GC choirs, Fairfield High School’s choir and soloist Allison Yoder (’11). The choirs, directed by Scott Hochstetler and Deb Brubaker, performed selections from a number of different operas, including “Otello,” by Giuseppe Verdi and “The Pirates of Penzance,” by Gilbert and Sullivan. Cauldrons, Creepers, and Bird-People: Opera Scenes 2010
This past Friday and Saturday in Reith Recital Hall, students in the opera workshop showcased their voices and acting skills in the 2010 Opera Scenes Performance. The performance consisted of eight scenes from eight different operas. Listeners also participated: audience members could purchase flowers for 10 cents to throw at their favorite performers. At opening, cacophonous cackling was heard from the back of the hall and a rather large group of witches crept upon the audience from behind, proceeding towards a cauldron on the stage.
