Goshen Advances To Championship Game
The men’s soccer team came away with the win Saturday night as they faced off against Taylor University in the Crossroads League Semi-Finals. The final score was 1-0 as senior Joel Yoder scored his second goal of playoffs. Yoder scored against Mount Vernon Nazarene University with five minutes left to play sending the Leafs into overtime in the opening round of tournament play. Against Taylor, Yoder was able to find the back of the net again with 20 minutes remaining in the second half. The first half of play was evenly matched as Goshen had five chances on net and...

New Coach Gives New Perspective, Shifts Focus For Men’s Soccer Team
The Goshen Men’s soccer program underwent a significant transformation this past spring when a new coaching staff, led by Arron Patrick, was brought in to lead the program. Patrick, a native of Grimsby, England, grew up playing soccer at various levels before moving to the United States in 2006. He attended Bethel College, where he played soccer all four years. While this is his first time being associated with Goshen, he isn’t new to Goshen athletics. “I played and ran track against them while I was in college. I actually scored my first collegiate goal here at Goshen and also...

Men End Sixth In Conference
Goshen College recorded an important victory in the league’s last regular season contest against Huntington University Saturday night. The Maple Leaf win was also the senior night for seven of their players at the Goshen College Soccer Complex. The first half favored the Foresters as they controlled the tempo by generating seven shots to Goshen’s two, which included creating a handful of quality opportunities inside the box but the scoreboard didn’t reflect any change as it read 0-0 at half. Both teams came out of the break with renewed energy and it only intensified when Goshen’s Josh Stoltzfus, a sophomore,...

Leafs Defeated Over Break
The Maple Leafs’ men’s and women’s soccer teams each played three contests over Goshen’s fall break this past week. Unfortunately, neither the men nor the women were able to secure a victory in the string of games. The men began their three game losing streak against Indiana Wesleyan at home on Saturday, Oct. 11. The Maple Leafs took the lead just 12 minutes into the game when Andrew Snyder, a sophomore, collected fellow sophomore Philip Longenecker’s pass and buried a shot to give Goshen a 1-0 advantage. The visiting Wildcats struck back with the final two goals, however, to overtake...

Men Lose On Road
Maple Leaf men’s soccer looked to continue their solid start in conference play by defeating Taylor University last Saturday. Taylor, however, made sure right from the start that Goshen would not get the win. In the span of just over two minutes, Taylor’s Tim Daniels, a senior, scored a goal and set up another to propel the Trojans to an early 2-0 lead. It was all Taylor would need to remain unbeaten in conference play this season. In the 21st minute, Daniels opened the scoring off a pass from teammate Sam Hardy, a first-year. Just over two minutes later, Taylor...

Knights No Match For Leafs
Winless in conference openers since 2007, the Goshen Men’s soccer team broke their unlucky streak in a tense match against Marian University, knocking off the visiting Knights 1-0 on Saturday night. Joel Yoder, a senior, scored the game’s lone goal when he buried a shot past Marian’s Tyler Blattner, a sophomore, from about 10 yards out in the 80th minute of play. The two teams battled to a scoreless tie as they entered halftime. Despite no scoring taking place in the opening half, the teams combined for a total of 16 first half shots, with Goshen goalkeeper Dean Nafziger, a...

Hat Trick Proves Too Much For Leafs
Goshen’s men’s soccer team looked to rebound from their disappointing loss last week by stealing a big win against visiting Aquinas College. Aquinas entered the game with a perfect 3-0 season and Goshen aimed to put the first blemish on their record. Despite solid play throughout the game, the Maple Leafs ended up on the losing end of a 3-1 result. An exciting first half saw the teams trade early chances, but it was Aquinas’ Aldony Mendez, a junior, who found the back of the net first. At 26 minutes into the game, Mendez redirected a rebound past Goshen’s junior...

Maple Leafs Stunned By Lawrence Tech
The Goshen men’s soccer team looked to carry the momentum from their 500th career win into a victory in the home opener on Saturday, but saw those aspirations disappear in a matter of minutes as the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils struck twice in the 2nd half. The Maple Leafs headed to halftime in a scoreless draw despite dominating play for the first 45 minutes. A lightening delay forced a 30 minute halftime and a healthy dose of rain fell on the fans brave enough to wait out the weather. Once the teams returned to the field, play was as hectic...

Men’s Soccer Parts Ways with Tavi
The second-longest-tenured coach in the Goshen College athletic program is gone. After 13 seasons at the helm of the Maple Leafs, men’s soccer coach Tavi Mounsithiraj informed his team last week that he had been asked to resign. According to athletic director Tim Demant, the coach opted not to take that offer, and the separation proceeded accordingly. Demant said, “I have nothing but respect for Tavi, who has been the face of Goshen soccer for many years, but I have to keep in mind the best interests of the soccer program moving forward.” In the release announcing the coaching change,...

Double OT not enough in soccer draw
Opportunity may knock more than just once. But whatever the number, its knocks are finite. Goshen and Bethel learned this the hard way Tuesday night as they were held scoreless for the final 40 minutes of a 3-3 double overtime men’s soccer draw at the Goshen College Soccer Complex. Bethel finished the night with an 11-7 edge in shots on goal, but Goshen struck first. Sixteen minutes into the contest, Josh Stoltzfus, a first-year, dribbled around one defender and fired from the right side of the penalty area to put Goshen up 1-0. Bethel tied the score on a header...

Men’s soccer loses despite shot advantage
Goshen outshot Spring Arbor by a factor of three Saturday night, but the Cougars found a goal and made it stand up. With just less than 18 minutes remaining, SAU forward Stevenson Storm stole the ball from the Maple Leaf defensive line. After a shot fake drew the goalkeeper off his line, Storm fired to his left from 15 yards away. The ball crept underneath the crossbar for a 1-0 Spring Arbor lead, and that would be the final margin. The Maple Leafs were not without their chances as they fell to 0-2 in Crossroads League play. Three free kicks...

Maple Leafs fall to Foresters
The Goshen College men’s soccer team fell to the visiting Huntington University Foresters in a final score of 3-1 on Tuesday. The game marked their second straight loss in Crossroads League play. The Maple Leafs fought hard in the first half, seemingly-matching the Foresters possession for possession. However, a scoreless tie was broken in the 43rd minute of play when the Foresters capitalized on a possession and fired a shot into the upper 90. Although they were down 1-0 late into the opening half, the Maple Leafs came out strong in the second half. Charlie Frederick, a senior, sent a...

The fives have it
Five goals. Five different players. A win and a draw. In short, that was the story of the Maple Leafs’ week. At more length, a pair of goals from the University of Saint Francis Wednesday night were not enough as Goshen won its Crossroads League home opener by a 4-2 count. Josh Van Allen, a junior, knocked home Goshen’s first goal at 6:39 of the first half when the Cougars were whistled for a handball in the penalty area. Andres Garcia, a sophomore, was next in the scorebook on a deflection 12 minutes later. Saint Francis added a free-kick goal...

Men’s soccer accomplishes impressive win
The Maple Leaf game against No. 17 Saint Xavier University ended in victory last Thursday. The Maple Leafs started strong by only narrowly missing a number of early opportunities. The Leafs finally found success in the 26th minute when junior forward Jacob Yoder received a pass from sophomore Caleb Longenecker and scored the lone goal of the match. Goshen’s strength continued throughout the game as the visiting Cougars struggled for quality possessions. Saint Xavier nearly evened the score, however, by sending a long ball into the back of the net mere seconds after time ran out. Goshen College’s impressive win...

Wildcats capitalize on Goshen mistakes
Indiana Wesleyan University moved itself into the top half of the Mid-Central College Conference on Saturday afternoon, defeating Goshen College 3-2 on the Maple Leafs’ home turf. The match was marked by a series of controversial foul calls; one such call in the second half led to a yellow card on Goshen coach Tavi Mounsithiraj, his first in 11 years at the helm of the Maple Leafs. Despite the card, Mounsithiraj diffused criticism of the officials after the game, saying, “we didn’t lose because of the referee, and we don’t win because of the referee. I told my team that...
