Golfers Hit Green, Continue Season Post-Winter
Nearly two months ago, the GC athletic department announced plans to drop the men’s and women’s golf programs after the 2013-14 season. While the women have not fielded even an individual golfer in the last two seasons, the news came to the men in the middle of a unique season setup. Within the Crossroads League, golf is one of two sports where teams can play in both the fall and the spring; it is, however, the only sport in which the regular season begins in August and finishes on the final day of April. After an early-spring season schedule filled...

Golf Team Doesn’t Make the Cut
In the upcoming academic year the Goshen College Golf Team will no longer be an active part of the athletic department. This news is due to the recent budget cuts throughout the school. This difficult decision impacts Goshen College students Brian Charles, Alejandro Genis, sophomores, and Benjamin Pollitt, a junior, who were members of the team before the cut. Pollitt takes the decision much more personally in comparison to his teammates. Pollitt feels the decision is harder for him to take because they (Genis and Charles) haven’t been through the hardships with golf that he has while at Goshen. “When...

Men’s golf team suffers injury, pulls through
The Goshen Men’s golf team competed in the two-day St. Francis Invitational this weekend against stiff competition. However, the biggest struggles of the weekend were of the unexpected variety: weather and injuries. The Maple Leafs golfers went as a trio to Brookwood Country Club in Ft. Wayne, Ind. on Friday. However, Saturday the school was represented by a lone golfer. On Friday the golf team began play under miserable conditions for two of the golfers. On the third hole of the day, Brian Charles, a sophomore, began feeling pain in his back and feared the worst. “I think I dislocated ...

Building a program on passion and fun
Greg Hire, the new Goshen College golf coach, met with the Record to introduce himself and talk about the Goshen College golf team now and in the future. After a long career in business, he purchased Timber Ridge Golf Club and manages the course while also running the college program. Introduce yourself to the college community. Well, I’m local, born and raised right here in Elkhart County. I was raised on a farm. I’ve done a lot of things – eventually migrated into the golf business, though. I own Timber Ridge Golf Club—owned it about 10 years now, which has...

On winning at golf, and losing a father
Ben John Pollitt, a golfer from England, is a sophomore at Goshen College. He was the lone golfer on the men’s team a year ago when intercollegiate golf returned to Goshen College. He described his best athletic moment as “winning a matchplay tournament at my club after giving my opponent 28 shots in 18 holes.” Q: What brings you to Goshen College? A: I went through a company that tries to find you a sports scholarship and Goshen was one of the colleges that offer one. The coach was very forthcoming, I could ask him any question and he would...

New coach, new team
The Goshen College men’s golf team kicked off their fall season with the Defiance College Fall Invitational in Ohio on Sept. 18. Ben Pollitt, a first-year from Helsby, England and the sole member of Goshen’s golf team, finished 35th overall. Though he played golf in England, this was Pollitt’s first match in the United States. According to coach Allison Bailey, although this wasn’t Pollitt’s best round, “He learned a lot and knows what to build on.” This is also Bailey’s first year at Goshen. She previously worked as a golf professional, giving lessons at the Elkhart Country Club. While making...
