Inside our local co-op
Tucked away on Main Street in downtown Goshen, just blocks from the theater, sits a hidden gem, the Maple City Market. Known simply as “the co-op” to many longtime shoppers, this small but mighty store is more than just a grocery stop. It’s a hub for sustainable, local living and a symbol of community values in an ever-commercialized world. At first glance, the store seems relatively small, with not much going on outside. Once inside, though, the aisles reveal a treasure trove of goods from locally made soaps and creamery products to fresh produce and organic bulk foods. The aroma...

Looking local
I don’t think I’m alone in saying that this has been a rough week. (It’s Tuesday as I write this — long way to go) There’s a lot going on, and if you’re tired of hearing about it I get it, but stay with me because I think this is important. Everyone has their own reactions, feelings and fears related to the events in our country this week, and I’m privileged to be a straight white non-disabled male. When we hear about the things that are happening in our nation’s capital, and the fallout around the country and the world,...

Mayor Leichty speaks at convocation
On Wednesday, the Goshen College convocation featured Mayor Gina Leichty, ’95. Leichty’s presentation, titled “The Politician’s Guide to Not Being a Politician,” came at the height of the national election season. Leichty spoke on the dramatic differences between local and national politics, but also acknowledged her own position as the first woman to be mayor of Goshen, and the relevance of the current presidential race which could result in the first woman being elected as president of the United States. Leichty grew emotional telling the story of a young girl who thought that it might be alright to have...

Goshen Printmakers Guild: Home to a vanishing art form
The Goshen Printmakers Guild can be hard to find on a first visit. Tucked in an alleyway between the Art Store and Fables Books in downtown Goshen, the shop’s only sign is a 3×5-inch index card taped to the inside window of the door. Inside, the studio is bright and well lit. Brick walls encapsulate numerous presses and tables, with huge workbenches holding sets of letters in different fonts. Upbeat, modern voices like Lauryn Hill and Lil Nas X ring in the air, and Ida Short, the guild’s ever-enthusiastic caretaker, greets visitors in an apron. There are eight or nine...

Indiana Science Olympiad brings area schools to campus
The Indiana Science Olympiad brought local students, science, and fun to campus. As snow coated the Goshen campus last Saturday, 180 students from local schools competed in the Science Olympiad regional tournament. Science Olympiad is modeled off the Olympics and teams of 15 people from seven middle schools and five high schools participated in 23 hands-on science events. Amidst the snow flurries on Saturday, a group of students shot off bottle rockets on the lawn by the Yoder dorms. This event required competing teams to build 2 bottle rockets aimed to stay afloat for the longest period of time. In...

Local students compete in science olympiad
On Saturday, 12 middle school students put aside any Valentine's Day plans to solve a horrific crime: Theodore M. Banannas, the star monkey of the Happy Dappy Circus, was stolen! Possible suspects: Bob the Builder, Papa John and Cat the veterinarian. The students used fingerprints and powders found at the scene of the crime to reveal that Papa John was guilty. This forensic science activity – led by Mandy Richer, a sophomore; Jon Williams, a sophomore; Moon Shik Woo, a first-year; and Clara Sears, a first-year – was just one event that was part of this year's regional Science Olympiad...
