Biology professor’s murder suspect found guilty after nine years
After nine years without answers, it took a jury two and a half hours last Thursday to find Winston Corbett guilty of murder of Goshen College professor James (Jim) Miller and attempted murder of his wife, Linda Miller. Corbett, 16 years old at the time of the murder, was arrested on Oct. 28, 2018 and could now be facing up to 65 years in prison for each charge. The tragedy in 2011 left the GC community aching the loss of a biology professor of 30 years. “Goshen College was Jim’s world in so many ways,” Linda Miller said. “He loved...

A note from Linda Miller
This past year has been one of the most difficult years of my life. Our family continues to mourn the loss of Jim as husband and father. Jim’s presence, his love, his jokes and his medical knowledge are just a few of the things we miss. The physical wounds incurred that night have healed, but the emotional ones will take more time. Our children are doing as well as can be expected for grieving children. Life is not easy for any of us. I have full confidence in the police and trust that the investigation will bring about a conviction....

Campus remembers Dr. James Miller
About 150 people from all walks of life congregated at Goshen College to remember Dr. James Miller on Tuesday. The event commemorated the one-year mark since Miller was killed in his home by an unknown intruder. The ceremony was a celebration of Miller’s life and allowed students and faculty to gather to remember him. The gathering was led by Bob Yoder, campus pastor, who began the event and introduced the speakers. Vic...

Miller case remains ‘active’ as one-year anniversary nears
The Goshen Police Department continue to show Linda line-ups of potential suspects, she said. Though Linda said she has not yet recognized a suspect, the process has “eliminated lots and lots of people.” The police are still receiving tips on the case and working to investigate each one, according to Linda. The tips have been “more active in the last two months,” she said. Linda said the FBI is working with the Goshen Police and has read the case file. Currently, pieces of evidence are being analyzed in an Indianapolis lab, she said. However, the lab requires several stages of...

President Jim Brenneman opened the special convocation by lighting a candle, symbolizing that “light overcomes darkness and life overcomes death,” Brenneman said in his opening statement. Ryan Sensenig, Chair of the Biology Department, spoke of the traits Dr. Miller brought to his department and to...

Dealing with Jim Miller’s death
Time and community will heal the wounds inflicted on the Goshen College community after Jim Miller's death on Oct. 9. But the sadness and new awareness of safety will not disappear quickly. When Miller, a biology professor, was murdered in his home close to the campus, not only did students and faculty lose a member of their community, they were also made aware of their own vulnerability. “On the same day that we heard about Jim’s death, we decided we needed to get a dog,” said Niles Graber-Miller, a sophomore whose father, Keith Graber-Miller, is a professor. “It seemed so random, and...

Students, faculty remember caring mentor
Ask any question to James Miller, and even if he didn't know the answer immediately, a few days later you'd get a response. "Sometimes I'd come to him with questions that didn't have to do with his subject, but he would go out of his way to look up the answers for you," said Peter Martin, a junior. Anne Lehman, a senior, mentioned an instance when Miller scared her by entering the room in the science building where she was studying. He had come to get a soda out of the fridge but stayed a while to talk with her...
