Grant Proposal Submitted to Lilly Endowment Inc.
On Sept. 30, Goshen College’s Center for Intercultural and International Education submitted a grant proposal to Lilly Endowment Inc. In the past, Goshen received Endowments for $750,000 in 2003 and another for $12.5 million in 2007, both for intercultural development. The previous Endowments made the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning possible, which was recently renamed the CIIE. Goshen College Path to Becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution
According to HACU.net, to become an HSI, Goshen College needs 25 percent of the student body to be Latino or Hispanic. This qualifies the college to apply for certain funds that help improve access and support for post-secondary education within the Hispanic population. Dr. Rebecca Hernandez, associate dean for intercultural development and educational partnerships, said, “This is a benefit for all of our students. The world has come to our door. So why not take advantage of the kinds of learning we can do together and grow to meet that really wonderful core value of global citizenship?” Lilly Endowment, Inc....

An ongoing conversation: employee Spanish classes to be offered
Employees at Goshen College received an email last Thursday from Norm Bakhit, director of human resources, offering an opportunity for free, non-credit conversational Spanish classes. The classes are funded by human resources and the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning as an attempt to “continue to develop and expand [Goshen College’s] intercultural opportunities,” according Bakhit's email. Bakhit began plans for employee Spanish classes after informally gauging interest levels. He knew that the classes would be well received by employees looking for professional and personal development. Logistics were his first task. He asked himself, “How are we going to do this?”...

Tamara of the Jungle
Summer typically means a break from school, but for Campus Pastor Tamara Shantz, this past summer was her chance to be a student again. Shantz applied for a faculty grant from the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning that would allow her to study Spanish in Ecuador for four weeks. Shantz traveled to Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, to attend classes at Simon Bolivar, a school for international students who want to learn Spanish. She studied one-on-one with a teacher for four hours every morning, giving her plenty of time to explore on her own and take advantage of...

Goshen challenged to become more interculturally competent
The Rev. Dr. Brenda Salter McNeil presented 10 ways people can become more interculturally competent in her extended chapel on Wednesday. McNeil, a leader in the field of racial and ethnic reconciliation, used the story of Jesus at the well as a model in her speech “A More Excellent Way." According to McNeil, students at private Christian institutions have the potential to become the desirable graduates that employers are looking for. McNeil said that employers want moral and ethical people these days “who will show up for work and not steal things.” The second aspect of a desirable graduate is...
