Visas finally approved for Indonesia SST group
After months of waiting in limbo and much back-and-forth with the Indonesian consulate, the Indonesia Study Service Term group will finally be able to enter the country. The ten students will leave from Philadelphia, where they have spent the study portion of the semester, on Thursday, March 3, for their six-week service component on three Indonesian islands. Five students will do their service on the Java island, three will go to the island of Sumba, and two will travel to Timor. GC welcomes Endah Setyowati from Indonesia
Goshen College is welcoming Endah Setyowati, a visiting global scholar from Duta Wacana Christian University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, to campus this year. Setyowati is the third professor from Duta Wacana Christian University to become a visiting global scholar at Goshen College. “They asked me to apply for the position as an Indonesian professor at Goshen,” she said, “but I don’t know… I’m like, I’m not so young anymore! Why don’t you ask the younger professors?” Despite her initial hesitancy, Setyowati eventually applied for and received the position. She is now teaching two courses: Indonesian I, a language and culture class...

SST groups to return to Indonesia
Following a hiatus of nearly 20 years, the Indonesia Study Service Term is beginning again, with the first unit taking off in the spring of 2019. The group will be led by Brenda and Jodi Srof. The college left the country following a travel warning placed by the U.S. government in the wake of terrorist activity, which has long since been lifted. In its place the college established the Cambodia...

Gamelan: an opportunity for outreach
Imagine entering a room filled with just one instrument, an instrument large enough to take up the majority of the space, an instrument that can be played by not just one person, but many, an instrument that brings people together and sparks community. That’s exactly the type of experience a gamelan can produce. Thanks to Duane Gingerich, a GC alum, the Goshen community will soon benefit from having a gamelan of their own. The gamelan, which comes from Indonesia, is in and of itself an orchestra. It consists of several different types of gongs and various sets of tuned metal...

A life of service through song
Galed Krisjayanta, a third-year student at Goshen College, released his first album at the age of 10. Cassettes, CDs, DVDs, and even karaoke versions of him singing traditional Indonesian folk songs have been sold, and every song has a music video. Krisjayanta’s album was used to raise money for the people of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, which had been devastated by an earthquake in which nearly 3,500 people were killed. That’s where he found the power of music in healing. Krisjayanta was born in Yogyakarta and spent his first eight years there. But in 2006 when the earthquake struck, his family was...
