Behind the scenes of graduation
The graduation ceremony is not just the culmination of years of hard work and dedication for students; it’s also a finely oiled machine that needs to funnel about 1,900 people in and out of the Recreation-Fitness Center in a timely fashion. Cynthia Good Kaufmann, director of planning and events, is in charge of logistics, but was keen to mention that the ceremony is put together by “a bunch of departments coming together.” Coordination between departments such as the Registrar, the Dean’s office, Comm-mar and the Events office as well as cooperation from students is necessary for a successful ceremony. Seniors take ‘wealth of talent’ with them
The Goshen College Music Department is saying farewell to 28 active seniors. At the recent Earthtones concert, seniors gathered at the front of the stage to sing “Woyaya (We are Going)” by Sol Amarfio, a symbolic moment that left 25 underclassmen standing behind them, ready to carry their legacy. Scott Hochstetler, professor of music and director of Vox Profundi and Chamber Choir, said that all of the seniors have “provided an immense [amount] of enthusiasm, talent and joy,” and he feels “grateful for their love for eachother and this place, their camaraderie and their deep involvement in campus activities.” Dontaye...

Augustine to bring hopeful message to grads
Sarah Augustine is a Tewa woman who is the co-founder and executive director of the coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery. Announced publicly on March 27, Augustine will be the keynote speaker for the 127th Commencement Ceremony at Goshen College. Augustine said the main work of the coalition is decolonization. “Our work is to undo in the name of Christ what was done in the name of Christ … dismantle laws and policies that are the product of colonization,” she said. Finding home
I was nervous before leaving for college. I remember asking my wise older cousin Caroline, a recent college graduate, for advice. “Before you know it,” she explained, “you’ll feel like you have two homes. When you’re back at home with your family, you’ll recognize the familiarity of your house and community. But college — your friends, your dorm, campus — will feel like home too.
