After months of considering 44 applications and resumes, interviewing the applicants, and discussing the goals of the department, four final candidates for the position of Bible professor have been selected for virtual campus visits in the next few weeks. Each candidate will teach a model Engaging the Bible class session and give a presentation of their current research. The process began in January, with professors Keith Graber Miller, Regina Shands Stoltzfus, Suzanne Ehst, and junior PJCS and Bible and religion major Elizabeth Reimer meeting every Monday at 8 am. ‘When In Doubt, Sing Out’
Singing out amidst the worry and fear of the current political climate and pandemic can feel impossible, and, yet, that is exactly what H. Roz Woll would have the Voices of the Earth choir do. Woll, assistant professor of music, began teaching at Goshen College this fall. She teaches classes such as Aural Skills, private voice lessons and vocal masterclass, as well as directing Voices of the Earth. Recently, Woll received her Doctorate of Musical Arts in vocal performance from the City University of New York’s (CUNY) Graduate Center. During this process, Woll had to complete three vocal recitals as...

Baldanzi examines women in comics
As a kid, Jessica Baldanzi, associate professor of English at Goshen College, loved comics. She would read Archie, Superman, Richie Rich and more. Over the years, her interest in comics has expanded past her brother’s superhero comics to the analysis of the female body as it is represented in comics and graphic novels. Baldanzi’s developing manuscript, Representing Women in Graphic Fiction: Bodies and Boundaries, is the result of that interest and a book proposal she composed during her spring 2020 sabbatical that has since been accepted by Routledge. Baldanzi’s work around feminism and graphic novels is a culmination of her...

Turning discs into meals
Goshen College professor of communication, Jason Samuel, knew he wanted to raise money to help The Window, but how to come up with a fundraiser that would be safe during a pandemic was the $20,000-dollar question. Duos from Indiana and Michigan gathered despite the winter elements, Jan. 9 for an epic disc golf competition. Forty Three teams competed in the Maple City Ice Bowl to raise money for a local food bank in Goshen, The Window. Samuel came up with the idea to help community members facing food insecurity. His original goal was to raise $2,000. Instead, the event exceeded...

Women’s basketball welcomes new assistant coach
Life doesn’t always go as planned. At 40 years old, Tyler Morris can tell you that – in person. From teaching elementary school students in Nebraska, to coaching high school students in Minnesota, to whipping up homemade pizzas in Iowa, to coaching at the collegiate level in Wisconsin and now in Goshen, Morris has done it all. On Nov. 2, Morris stepped into the assistant coach role for the Goshen College women’s basketball team, just five days before the team’s first game of the 2020-21 season. Morris had five days to work alongside Stephanie Miller, the head coach, getting quick...

Mid-semester changes in Student Life lead to restructuring
“Observe. Ask questions. Do not ask your team to do something you're not willing to do yourself. Be where you say you're going to be.” This is just some of the advice Corie Steinke has for whoever takes her place when she leaves Goshen College on Friday, just a few months after the start of the fall semester. After five years of filling numerous roles in GC Student Life, Corie Steinke will be leaving Goshen College on Friday, Sept. 25, to begin a new position as the director of discipleship and community outreach at Zion Lutheran Church in Lima, Ohio. ...

New professors bring passion for the arts to GC
Goshen College has welcomed two new faculty members to the performing arts department this year: assistant music professor H. Roz Woll and assistant theater professor Amy Budd. Woll and Budd are each filling vacancies in their respective departments. In the spring of 2019, longtime faculty member and beloved professor Deb Detwiler passed away after 20 years of teaching at Goshen College. Woll is succeeding her as the new assistant professor of music and Voices of the Earth director. Meanwhile, Budd is taking on her new role following Professor Doug Caskey’s retirement last year. Woll grew up in Chicago, where she...

Professors and the COVID-19 classroom crisis
As classes resumed at Goshen College last week, students and faculty alike have had to adjust their classroom methods both online and in person. Alysha Liljeqvist, assistant professor of business, and Carl Skip Barnett, adjunct professor in the English department, sat down for an interview about just how much their teaching has changed in COVID-19. How many classes do you teach, and how many of those have moved entirely to an online format? Alysha Liljeqvist: This semester I’m teaching three classes, two of which are utilizing a hybrid format and one that has moved completely online. Carl Skip Barnett: I...

Transitions in athletic department leadership
Harold Watson, former athletic director, was released from Goshen College two weeks ago. A team of four current GC employees have been selected to take over as an interim athletic director team and will continue to unfold the athletic department’s strategic plan until a new athletic director is hired. The strategic direction for GC athletics aims for a community in which athletes are involved and integrated in spaces across campus while still supported to win games. To achieve this goal, the athletic department will look to hire an athletic director and coaches who can model interdisciplinary engagement for the athletes...

Going vegan for $1700 and better health
In his lifetime Jason Samuel has partaken in many food-related challenges. He spent 15 days eating nothing but potatoes, 30 days as a vegan, 60 days as a vegetarian, and now he’s attempting once again, to exclude meat, eggs, dairy products and other animal-derived ingredients. Samuel, general manager of Globe Radio and assistant professor of communications, is attempting to go vegan for the full year — 366 days to be exact, since it’s a leap year. The stakes for the challenge are high with a $1700 bet on the line. Samuel was originally offered $500 to go vegan for two...

Recent grad crosses departments in new position
When asked what it is like coming back to campus after graduation, 2019 graduate Jonah Yoder said that, “the biggest difference is no homework!” Yoder, who graduated last May with an interdisciplinary major with concentrations in music, theater, and business, was hired this spring to work in the Umble Center as the Interim Technical Director. Yoder, Aaron Kaufmann and Jerry Peters are sharing the responsibilities of a full time Technical Director. Joel Pontius taps into passion for natural world with new book
Joel Pontius, sustainability and environmental education professor at GC, is preparing to publish his first book on March 1 titled, Place-based Learning for the Plate: Hunting, Foraging, and Fishing for Food. Started from a childhood passion for biodiversity and spending time in the landscapes, Pontius believes that hunting, foraging and fishing are not only ways to feed our stomachs, but also ways to feed people’s curiosity. Your book, Place-based Learning for the Plate: Hunting, Foraging, and Fishing for Food, how did it start? The book started with some friendships that I had with a couple of the co-editors, Mike...

Goshen College to say ‘goodbye’ to longest serving employee
There’s not much that Glenn Gilbert can’t do. In June, the jack-of-all-trades will add one more thing to his decorated resume: retirement. Following his 35th year at Goshen College, Gilbert will retire as the longest serving employee currently on GC’s campus. In 1985, Gilbert started as an electronics technician, working in a small room in the science building. On the side, Gilbert was also the chief engineer for the WGCS radio station. Later, he transitioned into computer maintenance for the six PCs on campus at the time, he says. Gilbert eventually moved into the physical plant shortly after as utilities...

On Borderlands, Mennonites and the broad sweep: A conversation with Julia Schiavione Camacho
Julia Schiavione Camacho is now in her second semester as an associate professor of history at Goshen College. Schiavione Camacho grew up in Tucson and studies Borderlands history. She taught at the University of Texas El Paso before teaching at Antioch College in Ohio. How did you find Goshen College? I’ve always been drawn to the idea of teaching at a Christian school. I’m Catholic, and some schools that I found are sort of more narrow in what they accept, and that’s fine. But one thing that immediately struck me is that it’s a Christian college, specifically Mennonite, which...

Nursing and Theater department chairs to retire after combined 59 years at GC
Brenda Srof of the nursing department and Doug Caskey of the theater department will retire at the end of June after both making the announcements before the start of the semester. The pair both graduated in the GC class of 1982 and have both served as chairs of their respective departments. In Strof’s 31 years at GC, she has witnessed a shift from a predominantly Mennonite campus to a more diverse one. Strof is excited about the change. “I think we have more of a stake in the community that we live in and in the region, so those are...
