New pizza place, café coming to Goshen
With summer just around the corner, there are several new additions coming to the restaurant scene in downtown Goshen and changes being made to familiar locations. The new restaurants being introduced include The Fold and Cortado, while Common Spirits, an existing restaurant, has decided to close its kitchen. The Fold will be a bar and New York-style pizzeria opening in the building once occupied by the bar Constant Spring. It is projected to be up and running in just over a month, according to Jesse Shoemaker, an owner and co-founder of the restaurant and Goshen College alum. Shoemaker, along with...

Soda Shop temporarily closed after fire
A fire broke out in one of the upstairs apartments of the South Side Soda Shop last week on Wednesday. The fire was contained to the apartment, and nobody was hurt. However, due to water damage in the drywall of the restaurant below, it is temporarily closed. Nick and Charity Boyd became owners of the restaurant in 1986, which has existed as the South Side Soda Shop since the 1940s. The building was built in 1910. The fire was called in just after 11 p.m. Nick Boyd was quick to express appreciation to the fire department. “The fire company, we...

Pérez makes local and national impact
At Goshen College, Gilberto Pérez Jr. serves as the vice president for student life and the dean of students, but outside of the college, he seeks to make an impact in as many ways as he can. In the larger Goshen community, Pérez has served as a city council member for the city’s fifth district since 2020. “That work has really placed me in a lot of different settings across the community,” Pérez said. “It’s looking at ways that the city is helping residents who have issues with traffic, issues with trash pickup, issues with how well streets are [maintained],...

Local treasure of coffee and community
Tucked away on East Washington Street is the unofficial caffeine supplier for the city of Goshen, The Electric Brew. A hodgepodge of decor along with various places to hide away and forget the outside world for a while greets you. To enter the shop is to wait in line and be given a chance to look around. A 1920s vintage bicycle divides the seating section from the front counter, a large painting of Earth as seen from space encompassing half of the wall, thrifted furniture of oak and pine wood that could only mesh well together in this setting, a...

Daycap review: Breakfast fare and quirky decor
If you’ve gone for a stroll in downtown Goshen around 10:30 a.m. sometime this fall, you may have noticed a newly opened restaurant with several patrons waiting outside. This is Daycap, a family-friendly, sit-down business serving breakfast and lunch food as well as cocktails. And it’s popular enough to have a 30-plus minute wait time at peak hours. Daycap opened on Aug. 28 of this year and is the second venue opened by Jami and Ryan Hawkins, a couple who have owned and operated the next-door Common Spirits cocktail bar since 2015. This weekend, I had the opportunity to spend...
