New academic programs approved by faculty
This fall, the faculty voted to approve several academic changes including launching a Masters in Social Work program, updating the Core curriculum and adding two new minors. Changes to a few other programs, like the interdisciplinary major and the social policy and advocacy minor were also approved. Most of the changes will take effect with the incoming class next fall, while current students will be given the option to adopt the changes. Student storytellers featured at in-person convocation
A group of first-year students experienced their first in-person convocation in the church-chapel on Wednesday, when five of their peers spoke as a part of the annual ICC StoryCorps project. Author of ICC read visits GC
First-year students had the opportunity to listen and ask questions to Kris Holloway about her experience writing “Monique and the Mango Rains” in an Identity, Culture and Community plenary session on Monday, Nov. 2. Holloway, an Ohio native, is the author of “Monique and the Mango Rains,” a required text for ICC classes since 2017 that highlights the story of Monique Dembele, a midwife and healthcare worker from Mali, West Africa. Search conference addresses strengths and weaknesses of SST
September 12, 1968 marked the inception of Goshen College’s Study-Service Term, with the first units embarking for Costa Rica, Guadalupe and Jamaica. Almost exactly 50 years later, 32 faculty, staff and students met for the SST search conference with the goal of reassessing the distinguished program. Eboo Patel visits GC
Eboo Patel made it clear that he believes that Goshen College has the potential to become a thriving interfaith community during his visit to the campus on Oct. 26 and 27. During his 24-hour visit, Patel, founder and president of the Interfaith Youth Core and author of “Acts of Faith,” visited with students, engaged with classes, roamed the campus and gave to formal speeches. Community Engagement Day
Goshen College first-year students participated in the 19th annual Community Engagement Day last Wednesday, September 20. This event, part of Goshen’s Identity, Culture and Community (ICC) course, sent nine sections of students across Elkhart County for a day of service at various locations, including the Boys and Girls Club, Greencroft, Habitat for Humanity, and even the Elkhart river, where students canoed and collected debris. First-Years engage the community
First-year students of Goshen College continued the tradition of taking a day to go out into the community and serve on Wednesday, Sept. 21. This event has occurred for several consecutive years, allowing Goshen to build stronger connections to organizations in the community by returning to the sites year after year. Some of the groups Goshen students aided were La Casa, The Boys and Girls Club, Soup of Success, Habitat for Humanity, Greencroft, Pathways Retreat Center, Mennonite Central Committee, as well as cleaning parts of the Elkhart River.
