GC to welcome Saint Joseph College students
Saint Joseph College, located in Rensselaer, Indiana, announced earlier this month that the institution would be suspending all operations at the end of the spring semester due to financial hardships. The college decided to cease activity after evaluating its financial standings and resources. On Friday, Feb. 4, the college released a statement saying the following: “After significant introspection and countless hours of discussion among key administrators, the college has come to the solemn realization that its prior plans to grow out of the current financial challenges cannot be realized. The financial challenges are too steep in light of the current...

Interurban Trolley offers GC students free rides
As of last Wednesday, the Interurban Trolley is free for Goshen College faculty, staff and students. Jim Histand, former vp of finance, Launa Leftwich, dean of students, Paul Householder, associate director of ITS, and Ken Newbold, provost, all played key roles in getting this program up and running. It went into effect on Feb. 8 and is available to anyone with an active GC ID. Over the years, the idea for this program had been talked about, but it wasn’t until about a year ago that GC began to pursue it. In partnership with the Michiana Area Council of Governments...

Bike Friendly honorable mention for GC
Goshen College is on its way to being bike friendly. Months after applying, Nat Dick, a junior environmental major, got word that Goshen College had won an honorable mention award from the Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) program. The League of American Bicyclists sponsors the BFU program and hopes to help create bike friendly communities everywhere. Unfortunately, the award is not as exciting as it may seem. “Honorable mention does not mean as much as people think it means,” Dick said. “[The BFU] thought that our application had merit, but we didn’t quite do enough to achieve the bronze level of...

GC applies to be a bike friendly campus
Goshen College may seem bike-friendly to many, but it’s up to the League of American Bicyclists to decide whether that will become an official title. In May of 2016, Nat Dick, a junior environmental science major, sent in Goshen College’s application for the Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) program. Dick, with the help of Jack Shomberg, a senior, came up with the idea to apply for the recognition during Jerrell Richer’s environmental economics class in the fall of 2015. However, Shomberg went on SST during the spring of 2016, leaving Dick with the task of filling out and submitting the application....

Res Life hosts 12 days of Christmas
Student leaders for Residence Life are working to bring holiday cheer to Goshen College’s campus through a “12 Days of Christmas” event lineup. The daily holiday-themed events started on Nov. 30 and will continue until Dec. 11, which is the first day of winter break. Among many other events, the schedule includes Christmas card making, the music department’s Festival of Carols concert, two movie nights and a hymn sing. Although Residence Life doesn’t have any annual Christmas events, this year’s resident assistants decided that they wanted to do something a little different. Jenae Longenecker, a sophomore and a resident assistant...

Personal assistant scam
On October 29, an advertisement searching for a personal assistant ran on page five of the Record. That same day, Melia Watkins, a junior, replied to the advertisement via email. On November 5, the advertisement ran again on page six. After exchanging a few emails back and forth, Watkins attempted to deposit her first check she received in the mail, only to find out it was fraudulent. “I saw this ad that looked pretty legitimate,” said Watkins, “minus the fact that they had horrible grammar and punctuation, which seemed a little fishy. But I thought, why not apply?” Watkins received...

GC hosts, honors grandparents
When Sarah Hartman-Keiser, a sophomore nursing major, was handed her first stethoscope, blood pressure monitor and set of scrubs last Friday, her grandmother Margie Keiser, a retired nurse, was by her side. John and Margie Keiser visited Goshen College for last Friday’s Grandparents Day festivities, and they accompanied her to Nursing 210: Intro to Professional Nursing. “It was exciting because I didn’t know we were getting those things that day, but it made the moment even more special. My grandma was there to be excited with me and see a part of my future become a reality in a small...

Al Roker visits Goshen College
Al Roker dropped by Goshen College on Tuesday in the name of breaking records and raising funds for Feeding America. The well-known weatherman from the Today show began “Rokerthon 2: Feeding America By Storm” on Nov. 6 with a goal to report the weather in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C. in a week. Along the way he’s raising money for the Feeding America food banks. For every dollar that is donated, 11 meals are provided for the food banks. Faculty storytelling workshop teaches servant leadership
Allison Montaie, the former head of the office for multicultural affairs and current head of the women’s center at Grand Valley State University, hosted a storytelling workshop for Goshen College faculty on Monday. A similar workshop was then offered for students the next day, October 27. Each workshop was offered twice, once in the mid-morning and once in early afternoon. An average of 15 people attended each workshop. “I know this year [Goshen College has] the theme of servant leadership. The goal [of the workshop] was to develop servant leadership skills through storytelling with faculty and then with students,” Montaie...

Butterbeer and Broomsticks
Last Friday night, Java Junction became Goshen’s Hogsmeade, bringing a favorite literary beverage to students straight from the pages of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” novels. One of the Harry Potter movies was shown, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” a favorite fourth installment of the eight-movie series. The Java Junction management team, which includes seniors Brian Sutter, Bryan Palmer, Alaina Weldy, and juniors Chris Moon and Preston Carr initiated and planned this event. The main feature of the Harry Potter night, besides the movie, was the Butterbeer. As the series gained popularity a recipe was created to imitate what...

The BSU wants you
The Black Student Union (BSU) is looking to become a prominent club on the campus of Goshen College this year. Led by first-years Alia Byrd, Lydia Beachy and Nashon Lora and sophomores A’Sean Street and Étienne Davis, BSU wants students to learn more about the group, starting by removing common misconceptions. For instance, Street made it clear that BSU wants students “to feel a part of BSU regardless of skin color.” “BSU is not just for African Americans,” Street said. “It’s for anyone who wants to learn more or just be a part of the club.” Street is not alone...

GC students can call FIRRST for safe escort home
The house is unfamiliar, filled with no-name faces. It’s dark and stuffy inside, bodies stacked up against one another, the music is loud and the air is thick. Go outside and you’re on the street, trying to remember the way home, but can’t. Your ride left somewhere between beer number three and eight and now you’re stranded, weighing your options. Pull out your cell phone and dial. The Functional Immediate Response to Student Safety Team is waiting to answer your call. Known as FIRSST, the Functional Immediate Response to Student Safety Team is built off of the initiative to create...

Mikol Aspinwall: In college at 13
Mikol Aspinwall likes playing American football, commutes to college from his parents’ house and sometimes works on homework in the Union while he waits for a ride home. He generally finishes it on his own, but his mother occasionally checks in to see that the job is done. A first-year at Goshen College, he is a computer science major and comes across as quiet, intelligent and focused. And at 13 years old, he is also rather young for a college student. Aspinwall is a student with potential; a recipient of the CIIE Leadership Program award and a participant in the...

CCYC serves Goshen students and faculty
More Goshen College students and faculty than ever are enrolling their children in GC’s Campus Center for Young Children. While several college students and employees send their children to preschool on campus in a typical year, the number spiked this fall. Janet Couch, CCYC director, said that of 62 enrolled children, 13 of them have parents who are college students and 18 have parents who are faculty or staff, which means that 50 percent of CCYC’s enrollment is linked to the college. “A majority of [the college students] are nontraditional students…childcare is important to them,” she said. Yessica Hernandez Ponce,...
