The Bearded Scholar
Students at Goshen College know Philipp Gollner as a regular old history professor. As a regular community member, Gollner can be seen attending sports events with his family. As someone who keeps a bit to himself, Gollner is known by many for a single trait; his ever present beard. As a history professor, it should come as no surprise to anyone to see Gollner walking up to the Mennonite Historical Library for perusal of historical documents. Letter to the editor
Letter to the editor Goshen College has made a very poor decision. The inauguration of an official Goshen College beer aka Broken Shield over Homecoming Weekend sends conflicting messages to the student body and campus community as a whole. I have no problem with alcohol at GC alumni functions, but naming a beer as the official drink of GC is essentially giving the students on campus the college’s blessing to make alcohol a part of their college experience. GBCo. and GC create homecoming beer
For the first time in Goshen College’s 130 year history, alcohol will officially be served at a GC-sponsored event in which the entire campus community is invited. President Rebecca Stoltzfus said via email to students and employees on Sept. 25 “In designing this event, we have prioritized celebration of our local community, hospitality that is inviting to a wide variety of people, and our commitment to healthy and clear boundaries around alcohol use.” Goshen Brewing Company, founded by Jesse Sensenig ’01 and Amanda Sensenig ’03, crafted the...

Alcohol: Responsible use, addiction and everything in between
Despite its “dry campus” policy, alcohol consumption is still a recurrent activity on Goshen College campus. This past summer, Student Life implemented a medical amnesty policy which states that “Students who seek professional medical assistance for themselves or others related to the consumption of alcohol or use of illicit drugs will not be subject to disciplinary sanctions.” This policy has opened the door for conversation regarding alcohol usage and consumption on campus. For Gilberto Perez Jr, vice president for student life and dean of students, the amnesty policy is an opportunity for students to “come talk to us … it’s...
