Last Saturday the women’s basketball team traveled to Huntington, Ind. to play a conference game against the Huntington University Foresters. The Lady Leafs were not able to overtake the Foresters and lost the game 80-56.
Goshen had an early lead, but the Foresters went to work and took over the lead with 14:40 left in the first period. From there, Huntington commanded the game and continued to end the first period with a score of 33-25.The start of the second half was all Huntington as they started strong and quickly advanced to a double digit lead. The Maple Leafs played a strong game, but ultimately were not able to overcome Huntington and the game ended with a Forester victory.
The Lady Leafs were led on offense by senior Cassie Grieves, who put up 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Goshen. Senior Erica Yost, who just last week scored her 1,000th point to become the 11th Goshen women’s basketball player to join the 1,000 point club, contributed 13 points, and five assists to the Goshen cause.
The loss leaves the Maple Leafs in the competition for a the final spot in the MCC tournament, just ahead of Spring Arbor University, and leaves their record at 6-22, 2-12 in the MCC. Their next game will this Saturday, Feb. 19 when they host Marian University.
