This past Saturday, the GC softball team took on Grace College in a conference double-header contest. The Maple Leafs were looking to bounce back after being swept in their Crossroads League opener by Taylor University on the previous day.
Unfortunately, they were not able to do so. Despite a 13 hit performance by the Leafs in the first game of the day, the Lancers prevailed in the high scoring affair by a score of 11-10. Senior Melanie Meyer led the team with three hits, going 3-for-5. Sophomore Jessica Cagigas drove in four runs with a pair of singles. Junior Abby Flickner scored three times in a 2-for-3 performance and sophomore Miranda Robles was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. The game began with Goshen matching Grace’s efforts in the first two innings; both teams scored twice in the first and once in the second. The teams held each other in check in the third inning, but Goshen owned the fourth. They scored five runs to Grace’s two. Junior Sam Langley had a double in the inning that drove in two runs and Robles, Cagigas, and first-year Brook Maes all had RBI singles in the inning. When it was all said and done, Goshen led 8-5 at the end of the fourth. The lead did not last long, however, as Grace answered by scoring six runs on seven hits in the top of the fifth. Goshen answered with a one-out RBI single from Meyer and a two-out single from Langley to pull back within 11-10, but was unable to push across a tying run the rest of the game and fell 11-10.
Grace won Game 2 behind the strength of a fourth inning that consisted of three home runs. Goshen was unable to counter and lost 11-3. Meyer, Maes, Langley and Flickner recorded singles for Goshen in this game. The Lady Leafs look forward to a busy, game-filled week. After traveling to Mount Vernon on Wednesday and Spring Arbor on Friday, they will host the Bethel Pilots Saturday at 1:00.
