For the third time in as many games, Isaac Huerta lifted the Goshen men’s soccer team to a win over a conference opponent. After scoring the game-winner against Spring Arbor last Wednesday and Taylor on Saturday, Huerta again netted the game winner, this time against Mount Vernon on Wednesday night.

Huerta, a first-year, continued his red-hot pace by scoring his 4th goal in three games. Dean Nafziger, senior goalkeeper, recorded his second straight shutout in the victory. The victory raises Goshen’s record to 4-8 (3-1 in conference) for the season. The Maple Leafs have won three straight conference games and look to ride that momentum into the match at Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday night.

The Goshen men’s soccer team hosted Taylor on Saturday looking for their second victory over a conference opponent. For the second game in a row Goshen had to play into overtime and for the second time Issac Huerta, a first-year, played the role of hero.

Huerta scored less than four minutes in overtime, lifting the Leafs to another nail-biting victory just days after carrying Goshen with a pair of goals against Spring Arbor on Wednesday. Spring Arbor is currently ranked 24th.

Huerta was named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday night for his recent successes. The last time a GC athlete won this award was in 2010, when Errick McCollum II won for men’s basketball.

During Saturday’s game, Taylor had an early opportunity to get on the board first but failed to capitalize when Giovanny Guthro hit the post for the Trojans in the opening minutes. However, after that the half was controlled by Goshen, who outshot the Trojans 7-1 in the first 45 minutes. The second half was more even as each team recorded nine shots. Goshen nearly doubled Taylor in total shots, outshooting the Trojans 19-10 for the game as well as taking 10 corner kicks to Taylor’s four. Despite Goshen’s strength on offense, the Leafs couldn’t put the ball past Taylor’s goalkeeper in regulation game time.

The Leafs started overtime with a pair of early opportunities but continued to be stymied by the Trojan’s defense. But then, as he did on Wednesday, Huerta put on his Superman cape and found a way to break the deadlock. Goshen’s Jamie Reid, a junior, found Huerta on a through ball and Huerta made the most of the opportunity, securing the win for the Maple Leafs. Goshen’s keeper Dean Nafziger, a senior, earned the shutout, turning away a pair of shots for the win.
