After winning 9-0 on Saturday, the Goshen baseball team looked to carry that momentum into Sunday’s double header against Cleary University. The results were not on Goshen’s side however, as the Leafs fell 6-1 and 8-2.
Freshman Tyler Waslawski was on the mound for the Leafs in game 1, and pitched well, surrendering only 2 runs on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Freshman Travis Grimm and sophomore Seth Lapp pitched an inning and .2 innings respectively.Cleary scored first in game 1, striking twice in the top of the 3rd before Goshen responded by cutting into the lead with a run of their own in the bottom of the 4th. Sophomore Vincent Caschera scored on an error by Cleary’s John Grable. Goshen would enter the 7th inning within striking distance of the Cougars, but then the dam burst as Goshen allowed Cleary to score 4 times in the top of the 7th. The Leafs were unable to recover and only collected 3 hits off Cleary’s Devon Jones.
The second game saw the Cougars pounce on Goshen’s pitching early and often. By the time the bottom of the 3rd rolled around, Cleary had plated 6 runs; a lead which would prove to be insurmountable. Cleary would score 2 more runs in the top of the 5th before Goshen would finally be able to score a run themselves in the bottom of the 5th. The Maple Leafs struck again in the bottom of the 6th but could only come up with a single run in the inning, ultimately falling 8-2.
Freshman Brad Stoltzfus recorded Goshen’s only RBI and sophomores Preston Carr and Mikey Namisnak also scored for the Leafs. Junior Trevor Emery led the team in hits with 3 of the team’s total 7 for the game. Goshen would strand 6 runners on base.
With the pair of losses, Goshen drops to 3-15 (1-3 conference) on the season. The Maple Leafs will resume play with double header against conference opponent Bethel College in Mishawaka on Thursday. Go Leafs!
