This weekend the Winter One Acts will be featured at the Umble Center. The two one act plays performed will be "Haiku" by Katherine Snodgrass and "La Serva Padrona" by G.V. Pergolesi.
La Serva Padrona means “The Servant Turned Mistress." It will be performed as a short comic opera for Aaron Kauffman's senior recital. The cast includes Aaron Kauffman, Brook Hostetter and Phil Weaver-Stoesz. The show will be accompanied by a group of strings featuring Elspeth Stalter, Laura Krabill, Philip Bontrager, Hannah Bartel and Ben Breckbill.
This short opera is the story of a maid who schemes to marry her master in a comic intermezzo performance.
“I chose it as my senior show because it appealed to me as a music education major," said Kauffman. “To me, part of music education is to expose people to different types of music, and also hopefully help people gain an appreciation for diverse genres of performance art."
The second performance, "Haiku," is about a family of three women and the relationship between a mother and her two daughters. The play unravels itself like a mystery, using flashbacks to give more information on the characters and their relationships.
The cast includes Sarah Lake-Rayburn as a handicapped younger daughter, Vanessa Jones as the older daughter and Jenna Grubaugh as the mother. Together these characters share a life of change and each has their own brokenness to share.
“Ultimately, to me it is a piece about brokenness," said Joshua Hofer, the play's director. "I see each of the characters having cracks in their persona."
The One Acts will take place Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. in Umble Center. All seats are $3 and are available at the GC Welcome Center and at the door.
