On Wednesday, Dec. 1 there will be a World AIDS Awareness event at Goshen College. This event, hosted by the Pre-Med Club and the Goshen College Nursing Student Association, will take place in Java Junction from 8-10 p.m.
While HIV/AIDS is receiving less media attention than it did during the 80's and 90's, it is still a pandemic in many places around the world. This challenging issue is going to be a part of our world for a long time, and people need to be informed about it. The Center for Disease Control estimates more than 1 million people in the U.S. are living with aids, and other places around the world such as Africa and Asia have been hit much harder.
To show support and be educated about HIV/AIDS, students are invited to come or stop by the World Aids Awareness event, which will feature desserts, live music, and personal stories by Professor Jan Emswiler, who did AIDS work for 8 years with MCC Tanzania. There will also be Java Junction specials, a $1 raffle, and a candle light vigil around 10 p.m.
"In our community we are often not directly exposed to the effect that HIV has on the lives of those who have this virus. As a GC campus community,we need to be aware of the issues that affect our world," said Kristen Steiner, pre-med club president and senior student. "This is a time for students to come and learn about HIV and AIDS and become informed and more aware of factors that are affecting those around us."
