Late on Wednesday night, local officials were alerted to a strange occurrence. An unidentified patient that was admitted to the emergency room of the Goshen Hospital escaped after arriving with symptoms of delirium and a skin infection that was analyzed by the emergency physician. Medical staff attempted to subdue the individual during the escape, however they were concerned about injuring them in the struggle.
The patient was last seen fleeing towards Witmer Woods, where law enforcement began a search using thermal cameras mounted on a search and rescue unmanned aerial vehicle. As of now, this search has been unsuccessful in locating the escapee and is causing alarm that the infection afflicting the unidentified patient can be transmitted easily. Two of the medical staff and two GC nursing students involved in the initial escape have begun to show symptoms similar to those of the patient and have been asked to quarantine.
Local public health officials recommend avoiding the area around Witmer Woods and staying indoors. Do not engage with strangers, and avoid contact with individuals who appear to have a discoloration of the skin.
For now, the only known cases of this new infection are the unidentified escapee, the two medical staff members and the two GC nursing students. For more information about what you can do to protect yourself and your family, visit the website linked here.
