The number one thing that gets brought up when I tell people that I bought a moped is if I have a DUI. The answer is no, I don’t. I bought my moped, a 2006 Honda Ruckus, because it’s awesome, not because my license is suspended and I need some wheels.

So, other than the fact that I look freaking sweet while cruising around downtown Goshen on a vehicle that looks like it was welded together in the sculpture studio, why’d I get it? Honestly, I think I’m having a midlife crisis. I’m graduating this year and the world of adulting is a scary place. Best way to counteract reality? Slap down some cold hard cash to fulfill your childhood dream of having a motorcycle, while compromising with your mom and girlfriend who don’t want you to die going 70 mph down the highway.

This is the part where you ask, “how fast does that thing go, anyway?” I would have to respond with a follow-up question, do I have a tailwind? Seriously though, I’m lucky to hit 35 mph if the wind is coming at me, but get me in a tailwind and I’m easily cruising over 40 mph. It might take me 15 seconds to accelerate to 40 mph, but I’m getting there.

I know, I know, the speed of the Ruckus isn’t really convincing you right now. What will convince you is the money I’m saving on gas. Prius owners have stopped reading and are probably losing their minds right now, yapping to whoever is closest to them, “He’s so clueless, my Prius gets 50 mpg, blah, blah blah…” Well, my moped gets 100 mpg! The Ruckus is literally twice as good as your “fuel efficient” car.

The Ruckus also gives me ultimate freedom with its small size and unassuming demeanor. No one bats an eye when I make up my own parking spots, allowing me front row parking anywhere I go. Plus, if traffic is slow or I need to get across campus, sidewalks are a totally viable option. Hopefully campus safety never sees me, because honestly I don’t know if I could outrun their golf cart.

Riding a moped is more than just a mode of transportation. It’s a lifestyle, a philosophy. Motorcyclists give me confused looks, deciding whether to give me the illustrious wave reserved for those traveling by two wheels, as my little 50cc engine goes screaming by.

The Ruckus is a conversation starter, money saver, it’s a whole vibe and it’s my favorite way to get around. While you’re stuck living in the fast lane, I’m living with the 35 mph wind in my hair, taking life slow and looking cool while doing it.
