Introduction of Study-Service Theology Term
Goshen College is inviting 20 Latino and African-American high school students from Christian denominations across the United States to take part in a two-week Study-Service Theology Term. The first SSTT will take place in June 2017, when Keith Graber Miller, a professor of Bible, religion and philosophy, will lead the study and travel in Guatemala. The Lilly Endowment invited Goshen College to submit a proposal for a program involving high schools across the U.S. to motivate students to consider working in the church. “All Christian congregations across the country right now have a shortage of pastors,” said Graber Miller, “so...

Jan Kauffman undertakes registrar position
When she graduated from Goshen College in 1990, Jan Kauffman never saw herself moving back to Goshen. But over the summer, Kauffman started her new role as the registrar. The registrar’s office takes care of student academic records, but that includes a number of different responsibilities that most may not be aware of. Between registering students for classes and handling transcripts, the registrar is also responsible for setting up the master class and exam schedules. Kauffman also deals with the academic progress of each student and addresses any problems if a student isn’t meeting those standards. She works alongside faculty...

Fact Book 2015 released
One fact that has been left out of the Goshen College Fact Book is that not many students actually know what the Fact Book is, let alone have ever used it. The GC Fact Book is an online collection of data about the college that has been gathered from various departments and offices such as the registrar’s office or the office of the vice president for finance, college relations, and admissions. Given that it includes information on topics like enrollment, athletic records and a number of other things from the last ten years, the Fact Book serves as a way...

SST Coordinator visits Goshen for first time
Today, Wilfred Villavicencio, the in-country service coordinator for the Peru SST program, ended his three week visit to the U.S. and Goshen College’s campus. During his visit, he spent time reconnecting with past SSTers and their leaders, exploring the area as it was his first time in the U.S., and giving a convocation this past Monday about his experience working with Goshen College students. “My goal is to understand the culture and the life here on campus,” said Villavicencio. “I work in Peru for students and I know my country, but I want to learn more about [Goshen].” Before his...

Finding ground in the study abroad reverie
“Here I felt like I was all eyes, seeing scenes in swatches of color I was unable to interpret.” -from Tangled Paths, an SST stories submission by Leah Nofziger, ‘94 Goshen College alumna. Often, when the question “How was your SST?” is asked, it is followed with an uncomfortable smile and a terse reply of “good.” Sometimes the experience is summarized with a generic “I went to Machu Picchu” picture. Goshen College’s Study Service Term creates an immeasurable amount of stories, from studying in Cambodia to serving in Peru. These experiences can be quite difficult to express and it’s frequently...

The board also decided to pass a new plan entitled Grow Goshen 2020. This plan establishes the priorities the college will be looking to work on for the next five years. The ultimate goal this plan lists is that “GC will reach sustained enrollment growth made up of students open to faith and learning from an...

Grow Goshen week
The first week in March, called “Grow Goshen Week,” is a time for thanking supporters of Goshen College. Throughout the year, Goshen College works hard to contact people outside of the campus to raise awareness about the institution and to ask for donations that help keep the school running. According to junior Student Associate in Advancement Armarlie Grier, the Department of Institutional Advancement runs events like the annual phone-a-thon, a telemarketing operation to ask for donations from alumni, as well as sends out postcards to alumni requesting their monetary donations to support the college. Because people are contacted year-round to...

History of the Hiring Policy: Timeline
The Goshen College hiring policy has been a topic of discussion in The Record over the last ten years. This timeline contains excerpts from past Record articles discussing the hiring policy and how students have advocated for its alteration on campus. This timelines provides an interesting reflection over how GC students have responded to the hiring policy in the past, along with how the movement for change has developed from earlier responses.
