Nathaniel Tann will perform for the first Hour After event of the year this Friday and Saturday evening in Newcomer 19.

Tann, a senior biology and psychology double major, is a guitarist and vocalist who has been advertising his show via Facebook with the name, “My Hipster-tastic Hour After.” But what does this mean? Obscure throwbacks from the 90s? Tunes from lesser-known musicals like “Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog?” An eclectic blend of instruments playing original music? Exactly.

But for Tann, many of the songs that he will be playing are standards.

“A lot of the influences I have come from stuff I grew up with,” said Tann. “They draw from shows that I like and music I listen to.”

The “hipster-tastic” evening will last approximately an hour and a half to two hours, with one intermission. However, the audience doesn’t have to just sit back and listen.

“The first half is going to be a little more relaxed than the second half,” said Tann. “There are many opportunities for people to get up and dance and enjoy themselves.”

Tann partnered with Campus Activities Council (CAC) to organize the venue for the event.

“The decor will be casual and informal,” said DaVonne Harris, CAC coordinator. “There will be tables and open space for chairs.”

Music has been a “hobby” for Tann since he was in middle school. He and his brother, both musicians, fashioned a makeshift recording studio in their home. Since then, Tann has been playing at local venues, at school functions, and, as of last month, has produced his own album. The album, entitled “Together in the Rain,” was released on iTunes in January. As a part of Tann’s Hour After, he will be advertising the album by giving anyone who attends a free download of the tracks.

Entrance into the event is free and food will be provided by CAC.  The performances begin at 10 p.m. on Friday and 10:15 p.m. on Saturday.
