Campus Activities Council, CAC, is proud to present its first hour after, La República on Friday, November 4th at 10:00 pm at New Comer 19.
La Republica is a Latin rock band inspired by musicians like Caifanes, Jaguares, Manu Chao, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Latin American music and the Beatles.Rafael Chavez and Daniel Moya, recent Goshen College graduates, started playing together during their time at Goshen College. Daniel’s brother, Juan, later joined them when he came to GC. Leah Yoder and Adam Nussbaum were also part of the band’s development. As they began to play a lot of Latin American music together, La República was born.
“We put together a couple of cover bands, a Radiohead cover band, and a Beatles cover band, with the current members of La República,” Daniel Moya said. “We definitely had a good thing going on, good chemistry, so we decided to try our own compositions and there we go.”
Their band’s name represents their Latin American identity and their stance on certain social issues surrounding the Latin American communities. According to Daniel Moya, music breaks down barriers. For this reason, La República was created to provide a sense of common humanity. Bringing together Americans and immigrants is also central to the band’s vision.
“La República seemed to fit a sense of common identity, a humanity with no borders, no race divisions,” said Daniel Moya. “It represents an alternative republic in response to the broken system that is going on.”
Many of their listeners look forward to sharing in the band’s vision for their music.
Joel Kawira, a sophomore on the current CAC team, said: “It is going to be a night filled with good music, good environment to make some new friends and a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the different aspects of the Goshen College culture.”
Kawira and DaVonne Harris, director of CAC and the Yoder residence hall, hope for a full audience at the show. “Juan Moya is very professional and I have no doubt that it will be an awesome show,” Harris said. “They already have a strong fan base, there will be refreshments and it’s free.”
La República recently released their first album which they will have on sale for $5 at the show. You can also check out a sample of their music on their Facebook page.
