Wes Anderson’s work hit the big screen at Art Club movie night.

Wednesday, Goshen College’s Art Club hosted a Wes Anderson movie night in the art building. Starting around 8:00 p.m., the showing invited students to dress as their favorite Wes Anderson character, whether that be Captain Zissou or Khaki Scout #5, and come together in the painting room.

Art Club also recently hosted a viewing of “Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present,” a documentary following the life of a Serbian performance artist who prepares for a major retrospective of her work to be displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Although Art Club works hard to promote awareness of student artists on campus, the movie night was a way of branching out and involving the entire student body.

“Marina Abramovic was a pretty intense film, so we wanted to do something more lighthearted… So we chose Wes Anderson this time,” said Maddie Gerig, a junior. “We just wanted to get people into the art building, and keep interest on campus. That’s the goal, to get people in and having fun.”

Hannah Yoder, Dona Park, and Anya Slabaugh Art Club, art club leaders, are preparing for the biggest event for the group—the student art sale. Each year Art Club hosts an art sale that showcases student work for purchase. Selling anything from ceramics to jewelry, students line the Union building with booths displaying unique pieces just in time for the holidays.

This year’s sale will be on December 8 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., a reading day for all Goshen College students.

“The art sale is always really fun and pretty well attended, and you can also get all of your Christmas gifts for really cheap,” said Gerig. “It’s fun to see what people are creating.”

Attendees will also enjoy live music as part of the art sale festivities, featuring performances by Goshen College’s Sadie Gustafson-Zook, Andrew Pauls and others.

Along with this, a new addition to this year’s sale will be a silent auction. The art sale schedule will be coming out soon with more details on the event.

The deadline has not yet closed for student artists wanting to set up a station at the sale. If interested, students may contact Art Club via email at artclubgc@gmail.com.

In the future, Art Club hopes to plan trips to art galleries, such as the Chicago Art Museum or the Toledo Museum of Art.

“We would love to do more promotion of arts on campus,” said Gerig. “We strive to feature student art anywhere on campus, so I encourage anyone with ideas to contact Art Club.”
