It’s not often that every child in a family plays the same instrument, much less that they all play well enough to tour the country. The 5 Browns, however, do just that, and will perform at Sauder Concert Hall on Saturday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. as a part of the Goshen College Performing Arts Series.
The five Brown siblings—Desirae, Deondra, Gregory, Melody and Ryan—comprise the touring piano group that captivates audiences with their joyous performances. The siblings play a combination of classical music, including anything from duets to complex quintet music.The New York Post described the group as “One family, five pianos and 50 fingers add[ing] up to the biggest classical music sensation in years.”
The Browns, a Mormon family, were all born in Houston, Texas. Each of them started piano lessons around the age of three. In 1991, they moved to Utah, where they continued with their private lessons.
The five children were homeschooled their entire lives, until college, when all five attended the Juilliard School, a prestigious performing arts conservatory in New York City.
The Browns were the first group of five siblings to attend Juilliard simultaneously. At Juilliard, they played on Steinway pianos. Since then, the 5 Browns have become strictly Steinway artists—they each own and strictly play on Steinways.
