Men’s soccer looks to the future
The Goshen College men’s soccer season is nearing its end. After last night’s game, they have a record of 1-14-2 with one game left on Saturday at 7 p.m. Despite how it looks from the outside, there is optimism both within the team and from the coach, Dan Sullivan, who was named head coach this spring. When asked about the season and the future of the program, Sullivan said, “We have weeks where the attitude is good, but when the results don’t come it is an added layer of stress while trying to stay on top of things. When you...

Painting with a most unique canvas
The swirl of the purple and white checkered flag as it’s carried around the field, the cheers of the crowd, or the groans as the ball goes out of bounds once again — this is what the average fan sees at a Goshen College soccer game. However, what they might not see is how the grass is maintained for optimal performance, how the trash cans in the bleachers get emptied or how the sidelines are straightened for the ball to sail over. In fact, most people have no idea what actually goes into getting the soccer field ready to hold...

First win for men’s soccer
The Goshen College men’s soccer team recorded their first win of the season last Wednesday, moving to 1-6-1 on the year. The Leafs outscored Concordia University 3-1 with goals from Mathurin Allawai, Tim Wilkening and Tebello Ntene. Allawai, a senior, scored his second goal this season during the 16th minute of the game. Tim Wilkening, a junior, scored the second goal in the 75th minute, with an assist by Eli Simones, a sophomore. This was Wilkening’s first goal as a Maple Leaf after recovering from a broken tibia last year. Ntene was knocked down inside the 18-yard box, resulting in...

Soccer starts the year perfect
Last year, the Goshen College women’s soccer team ended with a record of 5-12-1. This year, the team hoped to take steps in the right direction. And indeed, they have had an impressive start to their season: the Leafs are currently 5-0, their best start to a season since 1997. This past weekend, they won 3-0 against Carolina University, led by junior Seja Lang who scored twice for the Leafs. Brynja Hjartardottir scored the third goal to secure the win. “We are all very excited about our potential this season,” freshman Sophia Yoder said. “Our determination and togetherness could take...

Scattolon celebrates World Cup win
Absolutely ballistic. That was the state of the entire country of Argentina one month ago, when they won the World Cup in December of 2022. Goshen College student Pedro Scattolon was in the Argentinian city of Rosalio at the time, surrounded by his friends as they gathered to watch the final match. “We were winning 2-0,” said Scattolon, “and when [France] scored the second goal to tie, we started looking at each other. We couldn’t believe it. Some of [our friends] left and got in the car, turned up the music and didn’t know what happened after.”The match was tied,...

Weekly recap: Soccer, volleyball, and cross-country
With mere seconds to play in a scoreless first half against Madonna University last Saturday, Felipe Carli found himself with the ball just outside the center circle. A few seconds later, the ball found itself 50 yards downfield in the back of the net as the clock read 0:01. Carli’s stunner of a goal sent the Goshen College men’s soccer team into a frenzy. The energy in front of a home crowd grew even stronger as, eighteen minutes into the second half, Lucas Bontrager gave the Maple Leafs a 2-0 lead after a beautiful pass from Mathurin Allawai. It was...
