Concerto-Aria contest celebrates musical talent
Saturday, February 7, 2015 marks the 55th annual Concerto Aria. The Concerto Aria is a concert that showcases the musical talent that we have here on the Goshen College campus. There are auditions each year in the fall, where students prepare a piece to perform in front of music faculty. The faculty members then make a decision based on the quality and complexity of the performance. “The selection process can be very tedious,” said Dustin George-Miller, the Music Center office coordinator. Students spend a long time preparing for the Concerto Aria auditions. Although the auditioning process can be scary, Seth...

Hymn Marathon Raises Money, Spirits For Peace
The hymn marathon held at Goshen College on Nov. 14-16 was not limited to this small region in Indiana—it was a global event. Over 37 countries viewed the live-streamed event—about 5,000 people watching from all over the world. “I heard stories of people who were watching the live-stream and singing along as they cleaned their houses, or were singing along with us from their personal hymnal. There were people in Scotland and Australia hosting their own hymn sings,” Bobby Switzer, a senior who helped plan the event, said. The marathon, which was organized by Goshen College students, involved singing through...

Student Organizes Hymn Marathon For Peace
Friday evening at 7 p.m., hymn singers will gather in Newcomer 19 to kick off a hymn marathon. The marathon will cover every verse of every hymn in "Hymnal: A Worship Book" and will likely last the entire weekend. Hymns have long played an important role in the broader Mennonite culture and at Goshen College. Bobby Switzer, a senior and leader of the Hymn Club, said, “There is something beautiful about singing in parts. The individuality of each voice is allowed and valued for its distinctiveness, and yet the cohesive whole is more beautiful than any separate part. It’s a...

New Campus Band Showcases Talent
The new and powerful All-Campus Band will have a joint concert with Lavender Jazz this Friday, Oct. 31, hoping to show off the talent and flair for band music that Goshen has left relatively untapped in recent years. “Over the last couple of years we have had an increasing number of wind and brass players coming to Goshen College,” Christopher Fashun, director of the All-Campus Band, said. “The number of orchestra wind parts didn’t provide enough opportunities for these students and we needed to create a concert band to fulfill this need.” The band will be able to explore pieces...

Orchestra Breaks Mold, Performs At Goshen College
Traditionally, an orchestra is composed of two imperative elements—musicians and a conductor. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, which inhabited Sauder Concert Hall on Oct. 19 as part of the Performing Arts Series, requires only the musicians. Founded in 1972, this Grammy Award-winning orchestra is prominent for its unique and innovative methods. Orpheus aims to incorporate the intimacy of chamber music with the full resonance of an orchestra. Instead of a conductor, the musicians rotate leadership for each work, creating a diverse repertoire through collaboration. The group is composed of 32 members, playing instruments ranging from violins and cellos to bassoons. The...
