Hogan makes history
Last week, Goshen College received national recognition thanks to the performance of Drew Hogan, a senior business major, at the Twilight Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University. Hogan placed first of 304 runners, setting a course record and earning the second fastest time in program history with 24:25.7, second only to Matthew Keitany last year. He led the team to their overall placement of fifth out of 20 schools, and the men’s cross country team is currently ranked 21st in the nation. This makes them one of five ranked schools in the Crossroads League, which includes the number three and...

NAIA launches ‘Right Way’ campaign
The NAIA’s newly launched “The Right Way to Play” campaign is being praised by leaders within the association, particularly in the highly competitive Crossroads League, as a pivotal moment to underscore the values-driven nature of their athletic programs. Crossroads League Commissioner Larry DeSimpelare believes the initiative will amplify the league’s long-standing commitment to holistic student- athlete development and ethical competition, directly benefiting its member institutions like Goshen College. “I love that the NAIA has adopted this slogan, and the Crossroads League has always been a beaming example of this mantra,” DeSimpelare said. “The way our student-athletes and coaches compete in...

Goshen tennis embraces spring shift
The Goshen College tennis teams are transitioning from a fall season to a spring season, aligning with the rest of the country. The move brings new opportunities, challenges, and a shift in team dynamics for both the men’s and women’s programs. The most immediate benefit of moving to a spring season is the extended preseason, which gives players more time to bond and prepare. Matija Margetic, a junior on the men’s team, said the longer preseason will allow for better interaction within the team. “We get to team build more in the fall and figure out the best doubles combinations...

Proving the league wrong
On Saturday, the women’s basketball team beat Taylor for the first time since 2021, 62-60. The win was hard-fought as Goshen struggled in the first quarter, facing a 16-point deficit, but a buzzer-beater three-pointer going into halftime by Emme Boots, a senior, brought them closer. Zion Neat, a fifth-year, shined in the third quarter contributing 12 points on 4-6 shooting. This was followed by a key bucket in the fourth quarter that brought the Leafs into the lead. Taylor fought hard and took back the lead by five points, but senior Ava Lickliter sprung to action with two layups, cutting...

GC not leaving Crossroads League
In the summer of 2023, coaches of the Goshen College athletic teams were uncertain whether they would switch out of the Crossroads League and into another NAIA conference, the Chicagoland Athletic Conference, with the purpose of finding a better fit for their facilities, competitive level, enrollment size and values. “It felt like there was enough energy here to say we want to do this,” said Chad Coleman, interim director of athletics and director of campus safety. “I think the Crossroads [League] thought we were definitely leaving.” Coleman stepped into the role of associate athletic director in 2023 under Erica Albertin,...

Bowling: the new team on campus
Last year, bowling was announced as a brand new athletic team on campus. The announcement of the bowling team brought excitement to campus and with it, new athletes. Head coach Scott Curtis spent the majority of his time last year recruiting the current roster of first-years, which sits at 24. “Having them here is the payoff, and now we are going to get ready to compete,” Curtis said. When asked about coaching, he said, “It’s good to be back in that element because it is what I love, spending more time at the bowling alley working with them.” He also...

Following the undefeated start, they lost two and tied two games and had a record of 5-2-2 before entering conference play. In their opening conference game, the women traveled to Huntington University where they lost 2-0. Both goals for Huntington were scored within a span of 62 seconds. After Wednesday’s 5-0 loss to Marian University, the women’s current record is 5-4-2 on the season. The women’s soccer team faces tough competition in the Crossroads League. Three of the 10 teams are nationally ranked in...
