The Goshen College men’s tennis team had a rough outing against Spring Arbor on Tuesday afternoon. Playing on their home courts, the Maple Leafs fell 7-2.
The Maple Leafs did have a bright spot in the day, as Thiago Amaral, a first-year, and Krishnan Ganesan, a junior, both won their singles matchups against the Cougars.Goshen mixes experienced players from last year’s team and many new faces. Stan King, head coach, said that “the newer kids are working well into the team. Our number two and three singles players are freshmen, and they are fitting into their roles well.”
Goshen’s roster also includes a number of international students. When asked about how the younger international students are becoming accustomed to American college-level tennis, King said, “There is definitely a lot of learning that these boys have to do, especially in doubles. The game is a lot faster and you have to place your shots better; it is a bit for the players to learn.”
The Leafs will be back in action this afternoon, when they compete in the ITA Regional Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich. Their next home match is Sunday, September 23, when the Leafs will face St. Joseph’s College.
