It’s expected to be a full house of clubs, hearts, spades and diamonds in Sauder Hall this Saturday for the annual Kick-Off talent show led by the students of the Campus Activities Council.

A night of cherry reds, black ties and elegant dresses will be seen as this year’s chosen theme is casino night.

Pushing in their poker chips, the judges chosen to jury are athletic director and men’s basketball coach, Dwight Gingerich; associate athletic director, Chad Coleman; and associate vice president for human resources, Marlene Penner.  A winning prize hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Marisol Diaz, a sophomore marketing major and member of CAC, helped plan and organize Kick-Off. “We all have different ideas on how things should go,” Diaz said, referencing other CAC members. “So being present [and] sharing our ideas out loud has been very important.”

Milo Armstrong, a senior music education major who performed a solo last year and is performing again this weekend, was asked how he felt about the upcoming show.

Armstrong expressed being “not scared” and “excited” as the theme sets a “cool, mysterious and very jazzy vibe” for the audience and performers.

Armstrong believes Kick-Off is “the Goshen College event.” He noted many students don’t come to regular music department events, but for Kick-Off, everyone comes.

“For some teams, it’s like a bonding event,” Diaz said. “A lot of people go and if parents have kids who do an act, you’ll see community members.”

Armstrong’s performance this year will feature the song, “As the World Caves In” by Matt Maltese. There are a total of 14 solo and group acts performing everything from singing to dancing to comedy. Food and a photo booth will be available before the show; doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.
