In a three-set sweep of the visiting Pilots, the GC volleyball team earned a “W” when they hosted Bethel College last Friday night.

Despite the match being the minimum three sets, the Pilots gave the Leafs everything they had, as the largest margin of victory for Goshen was five points. The final game scores read 25-20, 25-22 and 25-20.

The teams battled back and forth all match, but neither squad could manage to gain much of an edge over their opponent. The Leafs were able to put together strong finishes to take all three sets from the Pilots.

The Leafs were led from the service line by Ally Roehr, a first-year, who recorded 29 of the team’s 33 assists. MacKinnon Tracy, a sophomore, Kylie Giger, a senior, Meghan Manley, a sophomore, and Danielle Plank, a junior, each contributed an assist.

Christy Swartzendruber, a junior, had a team-high 15 digs, with Plank adding 11 of her own. Roehr, Manley, Tracy, and Giger also recorded multiple digs with five, four, three, and two respectively.

Swartzendruber and Lindsay McQuinn, a first-year, tied for the team-high kills total with seven apiece, with Giger and Lexa Magnuson, a senior, each recording six. Darienne Maust, a first-year, added five kills for the Leafs.

Giger, Swartzendruber, and Magnuson each had one of Goshen’s three blocks that night. Giger, Swartzendruber, and Manley each recorded an ace.

With the victory over the Pilots, Goshen improved its record to 8-5 (3-2 in conference) this season and has won two matches in a row and three straight matches against conference opponents. The Leafs traveled to the 25th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University on Wednesday, with the match finishing after the print deadline.

Goshen will be back at home playing in Gunden Gymnasium on Friday, September 23, against Spring Arbor University. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
