The Goshen College Volleyball team earned a hard fought win over Roosevelt University Friday night. The Maple Leafs, coming off a loss in the conference opener against Marian University two days earlier where they saw their two game win streak come to an end, didn’t disappoint the home fans as they rallied from a two to one deficit to win 3-2.

The Leafs and the Lakers battled back and forth all night with the largest margin of victory being only seven points. The heavily contested match began with Goshen taking the opening set 25-20, before Roosevelt rattled off back to back 25-23 victories to take a 2-1 match lead. The Maple Leafs battled back to win the fourth set 25-18 and finally the fifth set 15-5 to wrap up the heavily contested win. Each of the match’s final two sets saw Goshen storm out to large leads early on to put Lakers away.

Goshen was led at the service line by Lisa Rodriguez, a junior, (28 aces) and Ally Roehr, a first-year, (18 aces) who accounted for 46 of Goshen’s 49 aces throughout the match. Roehr added 11 digs to go along with 11 from Christy Swartzendruber, a junior, 10 from MacKinnon Tracy, a sophomore, and a team-high 12 digs from Danielle Plank, a junior. Lexa Magnuson, a senior, compiled a team-high 14 kills with Swartzendruber contributing 11.

With the victory over Roosevelt, the Maple Leafs’ record is now 4-4 (0-1 in conference) on the season. Goshen hosted the University of Saint Francis Wednesday night with the game ending after deadline. The Maple Leafs will have a three game road trip against Hunting University, Grace College and Anderson University before returning to play in Gunden Gymnasium again on Friday, September 16 when they host conference foe Bethel College at 7 p.m.
