In the spring of 2015, The Record will have a new Editor-in-chief. Kayla Riportella, a junior from Des Plaines, Ill., is an English secondary education major with a writing minor, who “stumbled upon journalism in college,” never having worked in the field before.

“I’m excited and looking forward to doing something I’ve never done before,” Riportella said. “It will be something I can make my own.”

Riportella heard about the job from Duane Stoltzfus, a communications professor who encouraged her to apply. She came upon the field of journalism in her Writing for Media class, which she took last year for her writing minor. Through this class, she fell into the role as a contributing writer for The Record, and eventually became the news editor this fall, working her way up in a short amount of time.

She has always wanted to do something with writing and always had a passion for English, but she wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. Journalism has been one of the outlets she’s found most enjoyable.

“I love interviewing people because it forces me to talk to people I normally wouldn’t get to know,” Riportella added. “It’s exhilarating getting to meet so many different people.”

When she is not working with The Record, Riportella is a part of the volleyball team and working in the English Department for Ann Hostetler, professor of English.

What Riportella loves most about The Record is how it is “a reflection of Goshen College as a whole.” She encourages any student who is interested in being involved with the Record next semester to contact her by email at kmriportella@goshen.edu.

“We have an awesome staff, and I can’t wait to see what we can do together.”
