Restructuring Finalized

Administrative restructuring, including office and staff changes, was finalized over the summer.

On June 27, a memo was sent out to all employees of Goshen College informing them of the new structure of the administration.

According to the memo, in order to “better serve the college going forward” as part of the administrative restructuring, the President’s Council underwent changes and positions were revised.

“Major internal reconstruction for the organization is part of our strategic planning, as is preparation for our Higher Learning Commission reaccreditation process in March of 2015,” President James Brenneman said. “The goal also is to bring our operational expenses in line with our revenues as mandated by the Goshen College Board of Directors.”

“Current administrative restructuring was finalized after the May 30-31 Board of Directors meeting,” the president said.

According to the memo, “a primary driver [of the restructuring] is to live within our means… so that we are good stewards of funds we raise or get from tuition.”

Some of the restructuring took place through added staff positions and revamped positions.

Brenneman will now oversee the provost, VP for institutional advancement, and senior director of intercultural development & educational partnerships.

In the memo, Brenneman said he will be focusing more on “deepening the vision-setting and fund- and friend-raising capacity for the college.”

Lee Snyder was appointed as interim provost and executive vice president. In this position, Snyder will oversee day-to-day operations and, according to the memo, have “direct oversight of the VP of academic life and finance and VP for enrollment management & marketing”, and “the senior director for institutional research, assessment & effectiveness, along with athletics, will now report directly to the provost.”

Launa Rohrer has taken the “newly defined dean of students position.” This position will now be part of the academic life division and “more traditional student life functions” will be incorporated into this position.

Rohrer will be overseeing residence life, campus ministries, counseling services, the Academic Resource and Writing Center, student retention, and student senate.

Bill Born’s responsibilities, under his former VP for student life and dean of students title, have been spread out to the provost, VP for finance, VP for academic affairs and academic dean, and dean of students.

James Townsend, former VP for enrollment management & marketing, recently resigned and, according to Brenneman, “We are in the process of evaluating the timeline for his replacement.”

The President’s Council will now consist of the president, Provost/Executive VP, the VP for academic affairs, the VP for finance/CFO, the VP of enrollment management & marketing, the VP for institutional advancement, and the senior director of intercultural development & educational partnerships.

The President’s Council meets monthly.

There is now an administrative leadership team, led by Lee Snyder, which meets every other week.

This team consists of the VP for academic affairs, the senior director of assessment, institutional research & effectiveness, the undergraduate studies, graduate & continuing education associate VP for graduate & continuing studies, the student life dean of students and the international education associate dean.

Restructuring of office placement and staff positions was completed over the summer and are now in effect for the 2014-15 academic year.
