Grammy Award-winner Mary Chapin Carpenter will sing in Goshen on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. as part of the college’s Performing Arts Series.

“This year we wanted a folk offering as part of the series,” said Jenette Yoder, director of special events. “We have tried for several years to get Mary Chapin Carpenter arnd finally her schedule and our open dates matched.”

The concert, held at the Music Center in Sauder Hall, will feature songs from many of Carpenter’s 12 albums. Carpenter, a New Jersey native, got her start playing at local bars in Washington, D.C. during college. She signed with Columbia Records a few years later, then collaborating with guitarist John Jennings, her future producer.

Since her first album “Hometown Girl” was released in 1987, Carpenter has been known as one of the leading American folk artists. She has sold over 13 million records, garnering 15 Grammy nominations and five wins, and is the only artist who has won four consecutive Grammys for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Her latest album “The Age of Miracles” has also been nominated.

Carpenter’s music is a mix of folk, country, blues, rock and acoustic, a blurring of genres that allows her songs to speak to many different musical tastes. Her music often speaks about important social issues as well as more humorous subjects.

Carpenter’s songs have been featured in films such as “Fly Away Home” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” as well as on radio and TV programs, like NPR’s “Weekend Edition,” “Sesame Street” and “The Today Show.” She has performed at the White House and at the Superbowl, and with celebrated artists such as Sheryl Crow and Emmylou Harris. Carpenter recently won the Americana Association’s “Spirit of Americana Free Speech in Music” award, which honors artists who use their music to raise awareness.

“We are thrilled to have her,” said Yoder. “I think the audience will find her music meaningful.”
