Over 700 quilting enthusiasts are expected to attend the 20th annual Gathering of Quilters, taking place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 20 at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds in Goshen.
In addition to observing the nearly 200 quilts on display, those who attend will be able to enjoy a quilt block exchange, a quilt exhibit and show, demonstrations, vendors and an ugly fabric contest. The keynote speaker will be Brenda Papdakis, an expert in applique and Civil War-era quilts. A Vera Bradley wall-hanging designed and quilted for a fundraiser for the Vera Bradley Breast Cancer Foundation by Diana Bennett, a resident of Elkhart County, will also be unveiled. Tickets are $15 and are available at the door.
Among the many others exhibiting their quilts at the gathering is Gretchen Weaver, Goshen. Weaver has been quilting as long as she can remember, and often attends the yearly Gathering of Quilters.
“To have everyone who is interested in the same thing all in the same place is a really good experience,” she said.
Weaver also mentioned the importance of passing along the tradition of quilting.
“[Quilting] is a good life skill to pass along—plus, they’re beautiful!”
